I started the time counter as soon as the town screen loaded, went away from the computer for a bit to grab a bite to eat and came back at 16:25.34 ( 16 minutes and 25 seconds) and proceeded to start building a house similar to the one i was in the process of making prior to the crash yesterday. I played sims 3 again and used a stopwatch to time a possible crash. It's really not that bad but the first time it's "you want me to do what?" It would be nice to have the local geek or Dell support the first time you do this. I see other less critical drivers that probably need updating. You could even call Dell support and they can at least get you started. Fixing a botched upgrade could take a lot longer to fix then waiting a few seconds. Again depending on your internet speed this may take an hour (maybe more) so make sure you have plenty of time.

Alienware is considered a quality computer (you still have to update drivers) and is known to do things a little different (this does not make it bad just different). New drivers correct issues and frequently increase performance. Updating drivers is a normal course of duty for gamers especially video drivers. These are video drivers so your display may act funny at times - this is normal (but smoke isn't normal - just a joke). Depending on your internet connection the download should not take too long. Then download the second one and the same thing as before. After the driver is INSTALLED the computer needs to be rebooted (shut down then power back up). Just click the download AND don't get in a hurry. After that you want the third one nVidia GeForce. You want the first one Intel HD Graphics Driver. Take a few minutes to 1) make sure you have the correct drivers for your computer 2)take a second to read the whole section. Here is a link to newer drivers for your computer - alienware drivers I think these drivers automatically install after download is complete. First place to go is the manufacturer which in your case is Dell (Dell owns Alienware).
